Warnings to other teachers about rogue employers!
This is a friendly warning from a fellow EFL teacher well-established in Madrid who wouldn't want other teachers to be ripped off by erstwhile 'academies'.

If you decide to work freelance ('autónomo') you shouldn't accept less than 24 Euros per hour, remember, if you're over 35 years of age you'll have to pay 260 Euros monthly to Social Security, which isn't proportional to your takings, in addition to 7% 'tax', so you'll need a mínimum of 10 hours weekly at that rate in order to be able to live even barely decently.
There are some academies, for example, The English Tutor, amongst others, who only pay 16.50 Euros! as a 'false autónomo' (you can only consider this to be pocket money). If you get offered this rate this would have to be on contract so that the employer is paying your contributions. This week I've had to put up with measly-minded employers going on about their profit margins in order to pay this miniscule 'wage'.

Just don't fall for this, if you are even half serious about your job you cannot accept this amount.

Good luck!
